State/County/City Animal Ordiances 


State of Wisconsin:

Dogs -All dogs over the age of 5 months are required to be vaccinated for rabies and must be licensed.

Cats – Cats are not required to have a rabies shot, however, some cities do require that cats have rabies and are licensed; check with your local police department or city/village clerk.

Green County:

As per state requirements all dogs must have a current rabies vaccination. All dogs must be licensed. $4–altered $9–unaltered. Licenses may be purchased at the county clerks office in Monroe, from your township clerk, or at the Green County Humane Society. Licenses are renewed annually and are valid from January 1st through December 31st.

ocal Ordinances: local ordinances may supersede county or state requirements. If you live in a community with stricter guidelines pet owners are required to follow these. If you live outside of the city’s limits, then you are required to follow the county ordinances.

Albany: Maximum of two dogs per household. Dog licenses may be obtained from the Village Clerk-Treasurer. The fees are $3 for altered dogs and $8 for unaltered. No limits or licenses for cats.

Argyle: Maximum of 2 dogs per household. Fee for dog licenses is: Altered: $3.00Un-altered: $8.00. More than 2 dogs requires a kennel license. Kennel License fee is $36. The Argyle Police Department will issue fines to all residents that have not license their dogs by June 30th. No limit on cats. Cats do not require a license.

Belleville: Maximum of 3 cats and 3 dogs per household. Cats and dogs are required to have rabies vaccinations and both are required to be licensed. A litter of pups or kittens must find homes by 10 weeks of age so as not to exceed the limits.

Brodhead: Maximum 3 cats & 3 dogs per household. All animals must be vaccinated for rabies. If there are more than 3 dogs, then the house must have a kennel license which can be purchased at the City Hall. Dog Licenses may be purchased directly from the City of Brodhead. The cost is $10 per year, per dog. Kennel licenses-check with the city. Cats do not have to be licensed in Brodhead.

Browntown: Follow county guidelines. Contact village clerk.

Juda: Follow county guidelines. Contact village clerk.
  

Monroe: Maximum 3 cats & 3 dogs per household. All animals must be vaccinated for rabies and must be licensed. If living within the City of Monroe, an owner can get a license directly from the City of Monroe; Fee- is $9 altered and $29 unaltered. Cat owners are required to purchase a one-time license for each cat. The cost of the cat license is $5 for cats that are altered; $20 for unaltered cats.

 

Monticello: Maximum 2 dogs per household, required to have rabies vaccination; no limit on cats. Contact the village clerk for additional information.

New Glarus: Maximum of three dogs in the Village and they are required to have a rabies vaccination. Dog licenses may be obtained from the Village Clerk-Treasurer. No information on cats.

Outside of Green County:

Lafayette County: Townships and villages follow the State Statutes for rabies, licensing, and the number of dogs allowed. No information on cats. Is is recommended that you contact your township supervisor the county clerk for further details. Additional dog information is provided below.

Darlington: Pitbulls and other vicious dogs are prohibited.

South Wayne: Pitbulls are prohibited

Shullsburg: Check with the city of Shullsburg; there are numerous requirements regarding certai breeds and vicious dogs.

Freeport: 4 dog limit, dogs must have a rabies vaccination and be micro-chipped or tattooed, dogs must be registered, no info on cats.

Janesville: Maximum number of cats & dogs is 4, in any combination. However, if you have only cats or only dogs, you are allowed up to 3 cats OR 3 dogs. Cats & Dogs must have rabies vaccinations and must be licensed.
